Preparing for Medical School: Part 3

So you have prepared long and hard to study for the exam. I dug around on the internet for some advice and tips. Here are the most helpful suggestions that helped me.

The day before the exam, the most important thing is to give yourself a break. The MCAT is meant to be mentally exhausting. You want your brain to be at its most energized state on test day.

Here are some things to do to force yourself to take a break from studying:

  • If you have never been to the testing center, take a walk and identify the building. Take note how long it takes to get to the test center so you’re not late.
  • Go to the AAMC site and read their section on tips for test day.
  • Also on the AAMC site,  you can practice using the testing software. It shows you how to highlight text and cross off answers.
  • Prepare some light snacks to eat for break time.
  • Sleep plenty. Wake up early.

On test day:

  • Sign in at testing center. You have to sign-in every time you leave the testing room for breaks. Familiarize yourself with the location of the washroom.
  • The MCAT is more than just a test of knowledge; it also tests your confidence. Take a moment before each section of the exam and envision yourself aceing all the questions. Believe that you are well-prepared and you are right.
  • Snack and hydrate lightly during breaks. Try to avoid a big lunch, which could cause drowsiness. Consider bringing an energy drink to stay focused in the later sections.
  • At the end of exam, do check the “I wish to have my exam scored” box. The scoring is relative, meaning the top scorers don’t necessarily have everything correct. You may still get a good score even if you think you did poorly.
