It’s a Saturday afternoon, your hair is curled and pinned back, you smell like garden of rosebushes. You feel good. You’re waiting for your friend to catch a bite to eat at a cute, boho cafe right around the corner from your snug studio on the 4th floor where your sister is probably playing the guitar and plastering nail decals on her toes. Nothing is going wrong, you’re in a happy place. You see your friend parking her car near the curb. Wait, you don’t have a car. She walks in wearing a fitted pencil skirt and grey top, you could almost smell the Downy and iron steam. You don’t have an ironing board, it didn’t fit in the closet so you threw it away. Sitting opposite in our booth, we exchange a few words and she then continues to talk about her recent project abroad and the many experiences and perspectives she came across. McGill Connect (the Ten Thousand Coffees networking platform) is taking off and people are seeing great results. It makes it easy to break the ice and ask professionals out for a meet…because in being on the platform, they’ve agreed to be open to meeting. It’s engaging, interactive, easy to use and incredibly resourceful. There’s even a tinder-esque feature that can randomly show you profiles based on your interests.
I love it. It’s tech-savvy and progressive and so easy to use. Although, it can be nerve racking. Especially for those of us just starting out. I know a lot of people that think talking on the phone is weird, let alone contacting a stranger to sit down for life chats about their ambitions.
Recently, my boss did something saintly. It really hit her one afternoon that I love writing and social media…and she knows social media writers. To be honest, I was incredibly flattered that she read any of my pieces at all. She ended up contacting major social media McGill staff to see if they would like to meet with a humble, young blogger. Much to my appreciation, they accepted.
This past semester I’ve been facilitating an online course taught through McGill called “Social Learning for Social Impact,” created by Professors Anita Novak, Henry Mintzberg, Leslie Breitner and Carlos Rueda. I had always been slightly skeptical about online jobs but I’ve never been so sure about the influence of the Internet until now. With final exams rolling around the corner, this is about the time when students begin panicking. Without the slightest bit of hesitation, they initiate their ritual late-night cram-sessions and caffeine binges in order to catch up on their schoolwork. That’s the one most important item that can lead you to obtaining and keeping a very solid reputation on Linkedin. To tell the truth, how many profiles have you visited lately and reading profiles, you have had that feeling that behind those fancy words something is missing?

In addition, it will generate more visits to your profile and if your profile shines, then people will want to connect with you.
Nothing compares with your online resume. You own it. You have total control over the information contained in it. It gives you so much exposure within your industry, not to mention the effects on your reputation and credibility.
Lately, some successful platforms such as LinkedIn have developed tremendous SEO tools to keep you on top of the list when you look for new challenges. LinkedIn offers to build up your reputation and contact or be contacted by decision makers with basic and free features, and others, more advanced, at a fee. To pay for some added features is entirely up to you since LinkedIn offers tools that help you manage your information in real time and build up your contacts. The time you spend and accessibility might improve if you take your wallet out.
Personally, I have not paid a cent since I started using it back in 2009 but let me tell you I invested a lot of time!
The number of hiring managers who use search engines to find the most qualified people in the market place have increased exponentially.
As mentioned before, Internet is the fastest way to find the right candidate for the right position without having to deal with opening or closing hours or even location. Head hunters use the Internet just like you would: with keywords. These are based on work experience, schools, skills and also your social life.
If you really want to be found, you need to broadcast your resume like any other organization would advertise its product to get customers: via your own website.
Let’s say that you need a job as soon as possible. What are you going to do? Hum, I am looking for a Marketing Coordinator position within the Montreal area = 199,000 results. Do you really have enough time banked on your “free-time” account to click on every single link?
Well, as for one, don’t have that kind of time. But I still would like to find a position.
In order to make your searches fast…ER, you can use a tool called ‘advanced search’.
So, when we look for online job ads, we only tackle 30% of all offers as very few companies actually have the resources that allow them to search for the right candidate using search engine directories, specialized web sites and so on. As you must know, in order to quickly find the job of our dreams, we should first look among our relatives, friends, ex-bosses, ex-service providers, ex-colleagues, ex-girl (boy) friend, etc. But before reaching out to them, you should make sure your resume reflects the best of you.
