Launching Your Career in PR, Communication, and Marketing

On Nov. 24th, industry leaders in communications, PR, and marketing shared their unique insights with McGill’s students.

Everyone that attended the Speaker Series session got their hands on some top tips for the next step in their career. The presenters spoke with great candour while reaffirming that there is no specific path to become a communications professional. Here are just a few of these fantastic tips:

 Valery Pasionek: self-confessed agency addict.

  • There’s no vanilla flavour in an agency —no one’s bland!
  • If you decide to work in an agency, you’ll have a chance to learn from the industry’s superstars.
  • When job-hunting, don’t sell your skills, sell yourself.

 

Darini Vedarattiname: lives to help others and has managed to make a career out of it.

  • Don’t waste your time working for an organization if it’s not right for you.
  • Build your network and brand—stand out and rise above the noise.
  • Help people and be genuine while doing so. You never know what may come of it.

 

Deborah Hinton: believes that it’s ok if your career path looks like a squiggly line.

  • Give yourself career goals to help you stay on track. Figure out what you want to achieve and give yourself a deadline.
  • Embrace curiosity: ask questions and get involved.
  • Make sure your network is diverse—we can learn a great deal from different people.

Many of us walked away from this memorable evening with a new set of tricks up our sleeves.

CheersCongratulations to The McGill PR Grad Students for producing such a remarkable event last month! It was a beautiful evening at the sumptuous Mayfair Cocktail Bar as over 130 guests enjoyed specialty cocktails, delicious bites, and a riveting raffle with amazing prizes (like tea at the Ritz!).

Of course, the evening of revelry was all for a good cause as proceeds from ticket sales and raffle ticket purchases went to benefit Le Chainon, a Montreal based women’s shelter. Reports from organisers indicate that the event raised over $5,000 for the charity, more than double its original goal.

Career Workshop moved to fall

The Student and Alumni Network Career Workshop has been moved from spring to fall 2013. More news as plans develop – watch this space.  BTW, this frees up Saturday, May 11 for students interested in writing the new PRK exam. (See April 18 post.) Great learning and networking opportunity – free for students!

IABC is holding its first event of 2013 at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts on Wednesday, January 16 from 5 – 8 p.m. In addition to the networking opportunity, there will be a timely session on communicating through interactive media on behalf of large organizations. $45 for members, free for students! Can’t beat those prices!

Reminder: SQPRP Event This Weekend!

The annual SQPRP Young Professionals event is happening this Saturday! It’s taking place at the Hyatt Hotel this September 24th from 9:00 AM t0 4:30 PM. 

This year’s theme is ‘Public Relations and Strategic Visions’. Topics will include corporate social responsibility, social media, and the future of the PR profession.  

You still have time to register at SQPRP Colloque Annuel. Students get a discounted registration fee of $75. 

If you cannot make it for the conference portion, try to attend the PRMixer Cocktail at 4:30 PM.

Callout to ambitious PR students! Here’s a volunteer opportunity you don’t want to miss.

McGill BA graduate Kaylann Knickle is recruiting volunteers to work during an upcoming high-profile charity event!

Here’s what Kaylann has to say about the event:

*   This non-partisan event is called Fleurons Glorieux, held on November 8, 2011.

*   700-900 people are expected to attend.

*   Confirmed attendees include political leaders, military brass, celebrities and leaders in the business community.  The four event co-chairs are Paul Desmarais Jr. (Power Corp), Pierre Beaudoin (CEO, Bombardier), Marc Parent (CEO, CAE), Louis Vachon (CEO, Banque Nationale)

*   The evening will be a celebration to thank the members of the Canadian Armed Forces who have reached the end of a long combat mission in Afghanistan.  All funds raised will be donated to Canada Company, a non-partisan charitable organization that serves to build a bridge between business and community leaders and the Canadian military.

Pretty impressive! So, here are three good reasons for PR students to volunteer for this event:

Getting to experience the insider’s view on event planning and media relations; having the opportunity to network with high-profile individuals and other PR students and professionals; and last but not least, helping out a great cause!

ELAN Quebec: English Language Arts Network

Are you interested in the arts community in Quebec?  Are you an artist?  Do you want to do  work for arts based organizations?

If you have said yes to any of the preceding questions, then the English Language Arts Network of Quebec (ELAN Quebec) is an organization you should know about.

Created in 2005, ELAN Quebec is a multi-disciplinary community of over 8,500 artists and cultural workers in Quebec. As per the ELAN Quebec website, the organization aims to:

  • Provide support, services and networking opportunities to English-speaking artists of all disciplines in all regions of Quebec.
  • Promote the work of artists so they receive greater recognition and visibility.
  • Collaborate with sister organizations to coordinate and instigate support services, such as professional development and mentorship opportunities.
  • Build bridges between English-speaking and French-speaking communities.
  • Advocate on behalf of English-speaking artists and their community in critical areas such as funding and public broadcasting.
  • Promote arts and culture as a means to enrich education, develop the creative economy and serve as a motor for economic development.

Job opportunities and internships are regularly posted on ELAN Quebec”s Community News section. Recent organizations that have posted positions include Centaur Theatre, Studio XX, Black Theatre Workshop and the Contemporary Art Galleries Association (AGAC).

You can learn more about ELAN Quebec by attending their upcoming 7th Annual General Meeting and August Schmoozer on August 29th.  Here are some event details:
