Are you Ready to Meet your Mentor?
Because of its growing popularity, you might think that the word ‘mentoring’ is just another buzz word – like synergy, viral or interface. But in fact, the concept of mentoring is at least 3,000 years old. In Homer’s epic poem Odyssey, Odysseus entrusts his friend Mentor to watch over his kingdom Ithica and his young son Telemachus while he is fighting in the Trojan War. As a concept, mentoring is tried and true. In fact, throughout history, mentoring relationships have helped develop the world’s most renowned athletes, musicians, politicians and artists. Even pop culture is ripe with examples! Remember Obi-wan Kenobi mentoring Anakin and Luke Skywalker? Famous mentors… just Google it!
So what can a mentor do for you? More specifically, what can McGill’s new Staff-Student Mentoring Program offer? The Staff-Student Mentoring Program helps you connect with a member of McGill’s faculty or administrative staff. Chances are you would never otherwise meet this person on Campus. Even if you did, you probably wouldn’t have the opportunity to really know them. Our mentors know the University and have diverse backgrounds, interests and skills. Collectively, they’ve lived in numerous countries, speak several languages and have experienced incredible adventures. Tapping into that knowledge and life experience can be the starting point of a new perspective or even a new direction. We facilitate the connection, but the rest will be defined by you!
