Information for Participants

Where will my visit take place?

Your visit will take place at the Montreal General Hospital (MGH) located at 1650 Cedar Avenue, Montreal, Quebec, H3G 1A4. Information on how to get to the MGH either by car, or by bus and metro can be found HERE.

The office number at the MGH is B2.236. Click HERE for a map of the MGH.

If you enter from the Cedar Avenue entrance:

  • Walk straight down the C wing. You will pass a first set of elevators, then continue until you reach a second set of elevators.
  • Take the elevator down to the second floor.
  • Follow the B wing towards the reception desk at B2.132.
  • The office B2.236 will be on your left.

If you enter from the Pine Avenue entrance:

  • The elevators will be about 10 meters from the entrance
  • Take the elevator up to the second floor
  • Follow the B wing towards the reception desk at B2.132.
  • The office B2.236 will be on your left.

If you park at the hospital or take a taxi, please keep your receipt.  We will be able to reimburse you up to $21.00 per visit.

What should I bring to the visit?

Please bring with you:

  • Your MGH hospital card *
  • Any bottles of any vitamins, supplements, or medications that you are currently taking
  • A small snack to eat after your blood test

* If you do not already have a MGH hospital card, you will need to get one made at the Admissions office in room L6.130. You will need to bring a valid Medicare card with you. Please make sure you plan additional time prior to your visit to get your hospital card made.

How should I prepare for the visit?

To prepare for your visit, please:

  • Refrain from vigorous exercise and alcohol consumption for 48 hours prior to your visit.
  • Do not eat or drink anything for 12 hours prior to your visit. If you are thirsty you can have up to 1 cup of water in the morning, but no tea or coffee.
  • Do not take any vitamins or supplements the morning of your visit.
  • Wear light, loose fitting clothes to your visit. No nylons or stockings please.

How long will my visit last?

Your visit will last approximately 3.5 hours.  Here is a tentative schedule of the visit:

  • Review of the informed consent document (15 minutes)
  • Medical history followed by height and weight measurements (30 minutes)
  • Arterial stiffness ultrasound and blood pressure measurement (45 minutes)
  • Blood test and urine sample (15 minutes)
  • A questionnaire about how often you eat different types of foods (45 minutes)
  • A questionnaire about your level of physical activity (15 minutes)
  • A questionnaire about the foods you have eaten in the last 24 hours (15 minutes)
  • Group assignment and calcium education session (30 minutes)
