Christmas in Montreal

The close of the fall semester, followed by a few excruciating weeks of exams, is only the genesis of winter break and the holiday season; hence, these painful weeks are not only endured, but ironically anticipated by McGill students. For many, the completion of their last exam means returning home (wherever it may be) to family or even heading on a hot vacation. But for those staying in Montreal, the prospects aren’t bleak in comparison; on the contrary, Montreal comes alive in the winter, in spite of the cold.

Atwater Christmas Market

What Montreal lacks in weather, it most certainly makes up for in Christmas markets. The city boasts over 20+ Christmas markets in and around downtown and Old Port. The Atwater Christmas Market, although still relatively new, has quickly become a crowd favorite. The market’s much revered ‘raclette party,’ hot wine and cider, food trucks, Christmas trees for sale and more have made it a Montreal Christmas staple for years to come. Check it out until December 22nd at Atwater Market!

Ice Skating in Old Port

What more do I need to say? Skate, fall and sip on hot chocolate (or something stronger), all while enjoying the beautiful Old Montreal. Tickets can be bought online or in person and skates are available for rent. Check out the weather and skating conditions online prior to going for an optimal experience!

The Nutcracker at Place des Arts

This suggestion may not be palatable for everyone but I had to include it in the list seeing as the Nutcracker is simply a quintessential Christmas staple. The show runs from December 12-30 so if you’re looking for a fancier or more special night out, check out the details on the Place des Arts website!

Montreal Fine Arts Museum

Not really Christmas-y but I had to mention it since the museum is offering free admission this holiday season for everyone from December 21 to January 5! Escape the cold and go look at some mummies – the current exhibition is “Egyptian Mummies and Exploring Ancient Lives”!
