Communications Officer position

The Corporation of the Town of Cobourg is looking for a communications officer for a one year maternity leave contract.
Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, the Town of Cobourg is seeking a Communications Officer for a one-year maternity leave contract. The successful candidate will be responsible for the planning, preparation and delivery of communications for the Town of Cobourg to ensure citizens are well informed and to keep Council and administration advised of public opinions. The incumbent will carry out the communications strategy for the Town including coordination with Town departments, external partners and Council

Major responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
· Continue to carry out communication plans and strategies to support objectives and services of the Town.
· Provide tactical communication tools, using best practices to support administration to proactively identify and mitigate issues.
· Coordinate and manage the Town’s print, electronic, radio and TV advertising for all departments.
· Experience in website management, working with content management systems (Joomla), social media (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube), and web-based email distribution systems.
· Draft and edit a variety of communication materials including press releases, public notices, media alerts, web copy, speeches, briefings and other communication materials as appropriate.
· Continuously monitoring the Town of Cobourg’s official website and social media presences and responding to inquiries or issues on short notice.
· Develops and maintains effective relationships with members of the local, regional, provincial, and national media, through such actions as facilitating media requests for interviews or information, pitching stories of interest to appropriate outlets, and organizing media announcements, conferences or special events.
